As
a population we are aging and it is apparent that we
are living longer than ever before, therefore; quality
of life is an important issue. Osteoporosis and osteoarthritis
are bone diseases that can rob us of healthy and active
lifestyles. The staff and physicians at Arrowhead Orthopaedics
recognize this |
| and
are dedicated to helping you and your loved ones in the
maintenance of good bone health and preventionof complications
from bone related disease. The Arrowhead Bone Health Institute
(ABHI) was established to provide comprehensive treatment
and prevention of bone health disease. |
Osteoporosis
is a silent and progressive disease that affects up to 28
million people, weakening bones and causing unnecessary
fractures that can lead to disability and even death in
some cases. We at ABHI can provide diagnosis, treatment
and education to prevent the complications of this disease.
At our facility we have available;
-
State of the art diagnostic testing for bone density (DXA).
This painless and safe procedure can diagnose osteoporosis
and establish a baseline bone density for those at risk
for osteoporosis.
-
Doctors specializing in osteoporosis treatment and prevention
who are knowledgeable in the latest treatment options
available.
-
A registered nurse to provide educational information
on risk factors, nutrition, and lifestyle recommendations
to improve your risk.
-
An up-to-date and modern physical therapy department with
staff knowledgeable in both floor and pool exercise therapy
designed to reduce the complications of osteoporosis,
improve balance, gait and stability, and maintain strength.
- A
surgical treatment option known as Kyphoplasty for some
vertebral fractures associated with osteoporosis.
Osteoarthritis
is a chronic disease that causes deterioration of the joint
cartilage (the softer parts of bones, which cushion their
connections to each other) and the formation of new bone
(bone spurs) at the margins of the joints. Although it is
associated with aging, often the cause of osteoarthritis
is unknown, but metabolic, genetic, chemical, and mechanical
factors all play significant roles in its development. Osteoarthritis
may first become evident in middle age, sometimes earlier,
however usually by age 70 most people will have symptoms
of arthritis. At ABHI we can provide;
- Diagnostic
tests at the Orthopaedic Imaging Center.
- Doctors
with expertise in the area of surgical and non-surgical
treatment of osteoarthritis.
- Educational
materials on living with osteoarthritis.
-
In-house physical therapy department with physical therapists
specializing in range of motion and flexibility exercises,
strength conditioning, general musculoskeletal conditioning,
and patient education on joint protection to slow the
progression of osteoarthritis.
We
at ABHI are committed to community involvement. Our upcoming
community lecture series will encompass a variety of topics
on improving and maintaining your bone health. ABHI also
provides screening and education on osteoporosis in various
locations in the community for seniors and others. If you
have a group that would be interested in learning about
osteoporosis, please call Janice Merkel at (909) 557-1600
ext. 275.
