Maximizing Bone Health



Tufts University issued a Health and Nutrition article about how diet can impact bone health. The article discussed the importance of Vitamin D and Calcium intake in maintaining healthy bones.

People who neglect bone health are more susceptible to bone diseases such as Osteoporosis, a condition in which bones become weak and brittle. Numerous factors contribute to Osteoporosis and the risk of fractures. For example, the elderly have a higher risk of experiencing bone loss. As they age, they continuously experience hormonal changes such as menopause and experience digestive related issues of which all can affect bone health.

Here are a Few Steps to Take to Prevent Bone Loss:

  • Consume plant sources of Calcium such as greens

  • Consume almonds

  • Reduce refined grains and substitute with whole grains

  • Include plenty of fruits and vegetables in diet

  • Include physical activity as part of your daily routines such as walking, dancing, yoga, weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercises

  • Avoid drinking alcohol and using tobacco products
